Lockdown. We were two fidgety creatives (and brothers) with limited bog roll and limitless news. Anything stable, sturdy and decisively NOT ‘unprecedented’ became our inspiration. To us, nothing seemed more predictable, or humble, than the chair.As an ode to this gloriously common furniture piece, stage 1 of the project saw us design and build a unique chair a day over 19 days of lockdown. With most businesses shut, we couldn’t be fussy with materials. 27 millimetre square-section timber and 40 millimetre wood screws would do the job. We learnt two things: the bare essentials are all you need to create a unified collection… and our 27 times table. And with that, stage 2 began. The chairs were shipped worldwide to 19 celebrated creatives who had volunteered to become their custodians. We asked them to ‘reinvent, reimagine or redesign your chair with an older person in mind.’ The brief was a nod to the outstanding work of Age UK, connecting our collaborators with those experiencing the isolating effects of the pandemic most deeply. On their behalf, the designers cut loose, then packaged their creations ready for return.The chairs were then reunited and ripped from their packaging at an exhibition in London. Two design duos. Two approaches. Two forms. One purpose. What began as a conversation with Tawanda and Francisco of @yy__exchange back in 2021, off the back of 19 Chairs, led us to question “do we need another chair?” This became an exploration of something much smaller: to design a connector, a bracket, a junction that could act as a simple gesture of creativity and a springboard for design. Starting with the same material and the same purpose — connecting lengths of 44mm square-section timber to build furniture — we arrived at two different expressions of the same idea. For us (slide 1), the connector became a chair itself: a playful, miniature CNC-milled aluminium expression of our design language. For YY (slide 2), the same function took on an entirely different form — one that speaks to their own way of thinking and making. Neither more right than the other. Both are gestures of creativity, invitations to play, build and converse. Ways of connecting both physically and metaphorically. Two identities. Two ways of thinking. A connection, and a point of difference. We agreed to disagree. Designed around 44mm square-section timber. The timber lengths slot neatly between the chair’s legs, fixing through the seat and backrest to connect timber to timber, or timber to sheet material. A miniature chair, doing the work of a connector.Using four chair connectors, we created a simple wooden stool to demonstrate the connector in use. 44mm square-section beech forms the four legs, connecting to a solid beech seat. reimagined into an outdoor collection by Butterfield Brothers. There weren’t many good things to come out of 2020, but 19 Chairs was perhaps one of them. Reacting to the damage of COVID-19, the project was a celebration: 19 unique chairs, designed and handmade over 19 days of lockdown, reworked by 19 of the creative industry’s finest and auctioned for charity. As two fidgety creatives (and brothers), it didn’t take us long to ditch the banana bread and transform our south London garden into the 19 Chair workshop. Crafted using simple timber and wood screws, the one-off chairs were shipped worldwide to the quarantines of leading makers and artists including Tom Dixon, Es Devlin and Joe Lycett. The reimagined designs hit the headlines and were exhibited under this very roof two years ago. Now, back as the Butterfield Brothers (what other name would fill the bill), we’re celebrating the humble seat once again with our first collection of outdoor furniture, 19 Outdoors. The thirteen-piece range draws on the sleek, no-fuss designs that came to be 19 Chairs’ signature but has been extended to comprise dining and lounge chairs, benches, a stool, an ottoman and three sizes of dining tables. Made from recyclable aluminium and powder-coated in three elegant colours, the collection is produced by NINE, a new contemporary furniture brand based in London. Although each piece is unique, the range is unified by material, colour and proportions, allowing the option of mixing and/or matching the cohesive designs and their complementary colours. We hope to inspire playfulness and reimagining, a nod to 19 Outdoors’ beginnings in 2020. <img width="4500" height="5625" width_o="4500" height_o="5625"
